My Interview in the Cardinal Connection

Recently, I was interviewed by Jared in the "Ask A Student" column in WJU's newspaper, the Cardinal Connection. Jared came up with the idea of the Ask A Student column, and it has helped the average student feel more "connected" to the school's paper. He also does a terrific job of making my unintelligible responses seem coherent and serious. And if you know me, that's saying a lot because it's usually hard to force a serious opinion out of me. So here's the full article: Ask A Student: Interview with Brandon Kaufman by Jared Gulley Here it is! The last Ask A Student column of the Cardinal Connection 07-08 school year! It's been a good time, a good run. I've had fun. I hope to see you again next year. I did this final interview with Brandon Kaufman a junior Psychology major. Brandon and I met in French class this semester and we became friends. He's a good guy. He host his own blog "breadcrumbint.com" where he sells t-shirts and comments on his world, and the world at large I suppose. He's a major hockey fan and a smart guy. I think you'll enjoy his responses to my questions. Cardinal Connection - What defines power in your opinion, and in the opinion of society what is power? What makes change happen? What can make change happen? Brandon - It's sad but by today's (standards) influence and power comes with money. Cardinal Connection - That's what everybody says. That's what I thought! So, power, influence, mon. . . do we have any power as a democratic society given the right to vote and decide who becomes President of the United States? Do the choices that a president makes have any effect on our lives? Should people actually care? Brandon - I think some of the things presidents do can affect the little guy, but really, to be honest, no matter how (many) people vote it's not going to change anything. Cardinal Connection - The worst example of the flawed election process was the 2000 Presidential election where Al Gore got the popular vote by 48.38% to Bush's 47.87%, meaning that over 500,00 people's votes meant nothing, not to mention the conspiracy that loomed over projected winner results in Florida Cardinal Connection - Changing gears a bit, what qualities, do you think, women find most attractive in a man? Is it the ever-present sense of humor? Or is that really just the party line? In actuality do women go for the stereotyped jerk? Brandon - Well, I've been in a relationship for almost five years, so I'd have to say "no" (laughs), cause I don't fit that stereotype. Let's just say that all women are not like that. Sense of humor is important. Different people mix well with different people. Cardinal Connection - Different strokes for different folks! Brandon - Exactly (laughs). Cardinal Connection - I think it's what you place your importance on too. Whether you place importance on friendship. . . sex. . . Brandon - What your values are. Cardinal Connection - Do you think popular culture influences people in their pursuit of the ideal mate? Brandon - Definitely Cardinal Connection - What inspires hope? What are the necessary ingredients for hope? Brandon - You always think it's going to better, there' going to be more. There's something beyond. Cardinal Connection - Do you think prostitution should be legal? Brandon - No Cardinal Connection - Do you think marijuana should be legalized? Brandon - I think even if you legalize for medicinal purposes (dealers) would still be selling on the streets because some people wouldn't be able to afford it (the legal way). Cardinal Connection - The Girls Gone Wild videos? Do they still make those? Brandon - I think so, like, if I fall asleep with my TV on I'll wake up at 5 in the morning and there'll be a commercial on, so I'm guessing they still do Cardinal Connection - What do you think of the girls that do Girls Gone Wild videos? Brandon - I'd kind of like to hope that there are girls in the world that have better things to do when they turn eighteen (than take their tops off for TV). Cardinal Connection - That's a good point. Is American still the greatest nation on earth? Brandon - See I've never viewed it as "We're America! We're number 1!" Cardinal Connection - I agree Brandon - As far as the economy and the American dollar, I think we're a lot closer to second place than a lot of people think we are. Cardinal Connection - Yeah, I think the Euro is worth almost twice as much as the American dollar right now. Brandon - As far as taking care of your own population other countries are better at doing that. Cardinal Connection - I think, maybe, we're one of the first generations where generally people, even conservatives, feel that way. It seems unless you're a hard core conservative, you kind of doubt American anymore. Cardinal Connection - Okay, to end let's lighten things up. What's your favorite movie? Brandon - Pulp Fiction, oh, no wait! You've got to put these two side by side: Pulp Fiction and Slap Shot! Cardinal Connection - Okay, anything else you'd like to say? Brandon - Go Pens!

The Atlanta Thrashers have currently entered a rebuilding stage, as they have traded away two veteran wingers for draft picks. General Manager, Brandon Kaufman, announced today that winger Slava Kozlov was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 1st round draft pick, and winger Mark Recchi was traded to the New York Rangers for a 2nd round draft pick, both in this year's draft. There is some speculation as to who may be on the chopping block next, but many sources are saying that Bobby Holik will be moved for sure, as he is the only UFA on the Thrasher's roster. Some are speculating, with Kaufman's defense-first mentality, that he may want to retain Niclas Havelid instead of losing him to the rebuilding stage of the franchise.

Kaufman Acquires Tucker

The Atlanta Thrashers acquired hard-nosed right winger Darcy Tucker from the Toronto Maple Leafs, it was announced today by General Manager, Brandon Kaufman. Tucker was acquired in exchange for prospect defenseman Arturs Kulda, prospect goalie Ondrej Pavelec and a 5th round draft pick in 2008. The move came two weeks after veteran winger Mark Recchi was placed on the IR with a fractured shin. Recchi is expected to miss at least another month. So far, Darcy Tucker has been the biggest acquisition made by new General Manager, Brandon Kaufman. "Darcy is infamous around the league for his play, he's a team guy that can do it all," Kaufman said during the press conference. The Thrashers had dropped from 4th in the Eastern Conference to 7th since Recchi went down with a fractured shin, and Kaufman felt as if he was expected to do something to keep his team within play-off contention. It is also believed that Kaufman saw Ondrej Pavelec as expendable after the acquisition of young goaltender Al Montoya. Al Montoya is currently 8-3-2 with the Thrashers ECHL affiliate in Gwinnett. Tucker is under contract for 3 more seasons at $3M per season.
